From Latin 'suspectare', from 'suspicere' (to mistrust). 'sub-' (under) + 'specere' (to look at). Literally 'to look at from under', hence with mistrust.

Note the stress: to susPECT (verb, stress on second syllable), but a SUSpect (noun, stress on first syllable).
