From the prefix `be-` (acting upon something) + `stellen` (to place, set). Literally 'to place upon', which evolved to mean placing an order.

Think of 'placing' (`stellen`) an order with a vendor. The `be-` prefix often makes a verb transitive, acting upon an object.
