From Latin 'expedire' meaning 'to free the feet', from 'ex-' (out) + 'ped-' (foot). Literally, to free the feet from a snare, hence to speed things up.

Think of 'Express Delivery'. To expedite is to make something express. The 'ped' root is also in 'pedal' – you pedal faster to expedite your journey.
