古フランス語の「deu」（devoir「負う」の過去分詞）から。ラテン語の「debere」（負う）に由来する。

図書館の本の「due date」（返却期限）や請求書の「due date」（支払期日）を思い浮かべよう。「支払うべき」「予定されている」という意味が覚えやすい。
