Synonyms: indict, charge, accuse

From Old French 'araisnier', from Latin 'ad-' (to) + 'ratio' (reason, account). The idea is to call someone to account for their actions.

It sounds a bit like 'a rain' of charges on someone in court. To arraign is to formally call someone before a court to answer a charge.
