vermeiden (to avoid), entgehen (to escape)

From 'aus-' (out) and 'weichen' (to yield, soften). The idea is to yield and move out of the way.

Imagine becoming 'soft' ('weich') and moving 'out' ('aus') of the way of danger. It takes a dative object and uses 'sein' for the perfect tense.
