From Latin *assidere* 'to sit beside' (a judge), from *ad-* 'to' + *sedere* 'to sit'. The idea is assisting a judge by sitting next to them.

To 'assess' is to 'sit' (sess) 'next to' (as-) something to evaluate it. Don't confuse it with 'asses' (donkeys).
