From 'ver-' (prefix) and 'Verstand' (understanding, reason). The core idea is 'to make someone understand'.

Think of 'Verstand' (understanding). To 'verständigen' someone is to give them an understanding of a situation. When you 'sich verständigen', you come to a mutual understanding.
