Synonyms: sich erheben (to rise), klettern (to climb); Antonyms: absteigen (to get off), sinken (to sink)

From 'auf' (up) + 'steigen' (to climb). Literally 'to climb up'. This applies to physically rising, mounting a vehicle, or advancing in a career.

Think of 'climbing up': climbing up into the air (smoke), climbing up onto a bike, or climbing up the career ladder.
