From Latin 'protestari' (to declare publicly), from 'pro-' (forth, publicly) + 'testari' (to testify). It's a direct cognate of the English 'protest'.

It's almost the same as the English word 'protest'. Think of it as the German version, using the common '-ieren' ending for verbs of foreign origin.
