From 'ver-' (prefix indicating failure or mistake) and 'säumen' (to delay, linger). So, to miss something by delaying.

Imagine you are 'sewing a seam' ('säumen' sounds like 'seam') so slowly that you 'ver-' (wrongly) miss your appointment.
