He instructed me to pick up the package.

((sb.)) ((with sth.)) to entrust sb. with sth. They entrusted him with the management of the project.

((sb.)) ((to do sth.)) to commission/instruct sb. to do sth. The company commissioned an architect to design the building.

Synonyms: anweisen (to instruct), instruieren (to instruct), bevollmächtigen (to authorize)

From `be-` (prefix) + `Auftrag` (commission, order). Literally 'to give an order to' or 'to place an order with'.

The key is the noun 'der Auftrag' (order/task). To 'beauftragen' someone is to give them an 'Auftrag'.
