From 'vor-' (before, in front) + 'geben' (to give). Literally 'to give forth' or 'put forward', which can mean presenting something false (pretend) or setting a standard.

Imagine someone 'giving' (geben) a story 'in front' (vor) of others that isn't true, hence 'pretending'.
