Related to Old High German 'ango' (narrow, anxiety), the same root as English 'anxiety' and 'anguish'. The feeling of being constricted by fear.

The sound 'bang!' can make you afraid. Imagine hearing a loud 'bang' and then 'bangen' (fearing) what it was.
