sich bemühen um (to strive for), werben für (to advertise for)

From the prefix 'be-' (acting upon) and 'werben' (to recruit, woo, advertise). It means to act upon something with the goal of getting it.

Remember that for 'to apply', it's reflexive: 'sich bewerben'. Think of 'working on' (werben) someone to get a job.
