Redewendung

in die Wüste

into the desert, packing (as in 'send packing')

Der Chef hat ihn in die Wüste geschickt.

The boss sent him packing.

to send ((sb.)) packing Der Chef hat ihn in die Wüste geschickt.

entlassen (to dismiss), feuern (to fire), fortschicken (to send away)

Literally 'into the desert'. From 'in' + 'die Wüste' (the desert). It alludes to the biblical practice of sending a scapegoat into the wilderness.

Picture someone being fired and literally sent out of the office into a vast, empty desert. This means they've been completely cast out.
