Verb

purzeln

to tumble, to topple, to drop (prices)

Das Kind purzelte vom Stuhl.

The child tumbled off the chair.

Die Preise für Äpfel purzeln.

Die Pfunde purzeln nach der Diät.

((from sth.)) to tumble from sth. The child tumbled from the bed.

((out of sth.)) to tumble out of sth. The apples tumbled out of the basket.

Synonyms: fallen (to fall), stürzen (to fall, to plunge), rollen (to roll)

The origin is somewhat unclear, possibly onomatopoeic, imitating a tumbling sound or motion.

Think of a 'Purzelbaum' (somersault). The word has a playful, less dramatic feel than 'stürzen' (to plunge).
