Synonyms: akzeptieren (to accept), hinnehmen (to put up with); Antonyms: sich widersetzen (to resist), protestieren (to protest)

From 'ab-' (off, away) and 'finden' (to find). Literally 'to find off', meaning to find a way to be done with something, either by accepting it or by paying someone off.

Think of 'finding' a way to get 'away' ('ab-') from a difficult situation. If it's about yourself, you accept it. If it's about someone else, you compensate them to make them go away.
