Verb

berauben

to rob, to deprive, to bereave

((sb.)) ((of sth.)) to rob/deprive sb. of sth. They robbed him of his money.

Synonyms: stehlen (to steal), entwenden (to purloin); Antonyms: geben (to give), schenken (to gift)

Prefix 'be-' (acting upon something) + 'rauben' (to rob). Literally 'to rob from (someone)'.

The prefix 'be-' makes the victim the direct object (accusative). The thing being stolen is often in the genitive case, which is a key grammatical point to remember.
