Synonyms: obwohl, obgleich; Antonyms: weil (because)

A combination of 'wenn' (if/when) and 'gleich' (same/equal). Literally 'if even' or 'when the same'.

It's a more formal or literary version of 'obwohl'. Think of it as conceding a point: 'even if it's true that...'
