Synonyms: vorschlagen, empfehlen, raten

From 'nahe' (near) and 'legen' (to lay, put). It literally means 'to lay near', as in laying an idea near someone's mind for them to consider.

Think of 'laying' an idea 'near' someone so they can easily see and consider it. This is the essence of suggesting.
