From Old High German 'tragan'. Related to the English word 'to drag', in the sense of pulling or carrying a heavy load.

Think of 'dragging' a heavy bag – you have to 'tragen' (carry) it. Also, think of a clothes 'rack' that 'trägt' (wears/holds) clothes.
