Composed of 'vor-' (forward, in front) and 'nehmen' (to take). It conveys the sense of 'taking something up' or 'taking something on'.

Picture 'taking' ('nehmen') a task and placing it 'in front' ('vor') of you to begin. The reflexive form means to 'take' a goal 'before' yourself, i.e., to resolve to do it.
